Between The Poles

Glass, copper, electronic mechanism, generative drawing with electromagnetic energy

2021

The work announces the use and utilization of electromagnetic energy as an artistic medium and antennas as generative sculptures. It is an act of revealing, a set of devices and techniques for deepening a relationship with unseen hierarchies and structures. This practice involves the creation of electronic mechanisms and custom software for the transmission and reception of electromagnetic energy, including the construction of antennas whose dimensions, materials and structure are defined by communication frequencies. The locality of the work as well as its earthly origins are highlighted by the aesthetics of the use of local Michigan copper alongside Indiana glass, both old time sources of materials for the construction of telecommunication infrastructure in the United States.

From recent uprisings against 5G cellular network expansion, through critical media groups assessing network accessibility, to amateur radio workshops, the social landscape in which this work is situated as well as its urgency are illustrated by the state of the relationship we have with the increasingly populated, rigorously managed and helplessly dependable electromagnetic spectrum.
